NASA and Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronauts are set for a historic milestone with the 100th US spacewalk, aiming to enhance the International Space Station’s power systems.
NASA is streaming live coverage as two astronauts prepare for a spacewalk outside the ISS; the spacewalk is scheduled to begin at approximately 8 a.m. and last for more than six and a half hours.
NASA astronaut Anil Menon and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Joshua Kutryk will exit the station’s Quest airlock during the US spacewalk to install and deploy an International Space Station on the 2A electrical power channel. The solar array will be primarily the seventh IROSA and will provide supplemental power to support critical station operations including its safe and controlled deorbit.
Menon will serve as spacewalk crew member one and will wear a suit with red stripes, serving as crew member 2, Kutryk will wear an unmarked suit.
Fellow Canadian Jeremy Hansen expressed his pride, noting his excitement to see the Canadian flag emerge from the airlock as the crew upgraded the station’s outdated power systems prior to a second spacewalk next month.
Furthermore, this will be Menon’s fourth spacewalk and Kutryk’s first; the excursion also marks the 285th spacewalk supporting space station maintenance and major upgrades.
