French artificial intelligence pioneer Mistral has completed a landmark €3 billion ($3.3 billion) Series D financing round, pushing its post-money valuation to €21 billion (approximately $24 billion).
Mistral said that the round was jointly led by existing investor PSG Equity, along with South Korea’s Samsung Electronics and the EU-backed Scaleup Europe Fund, which both invested in it for the first time.
The funding event is the largest private technology fundraising round in European history—was led by South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics, with participation from the EU’s Scaleup Europe fund (managed by EQT) and PSG Equity.
The capital injection nearly doubles the three-year-old Paris-based startup’s previous valuation of roughly €12 billion, cementing its status as Europe’s leading contender in the global generative AI race.
Mistral co-founder and Chief Executive Arthur Mensch noted that the fresh capital will directly target infrastructure bottlenecks, providing the computing power necessary to train advanced frontier models and scale operations.
As part of the strategic alignment, Samsung plans to integrate Mistral’s models to optimize its high-end semiconductor manufacturing operations, mirroring previous heavy-hitter industrial partnerships such as Dutch chip equipment maker ASML.
Despite the historic milestone highlighting Europe’s push for technological sovereignty, industry analysts point out the persistent financial gap separating European labs from US and Chinese competitors.
Nevertheless, Mistral continues to carve out a dominant market position by emphasizing open-weight architecture and secure, customizable enterprise deployment options for heavily regulated sectors like banking and defense.
Mistral is seen as Europe’s best chance of developing a leading AI company, even though it is dwarfed by U.S. rivals including Anthropic, whose valuation is nearly 40 times bigger at $965 billion, and OpenAI, valued at $852 billion.
As reported, both are planning public listings this year.
