For the past few days, viral conspiracy theories regarding Earth losing its gravity for a brief period on Wednesday have been making rounds on various social media platforms.
According to these theories, Earth’s gravity will vanish on August 12 for 7 seconds, thereby triggering a catastrophic event which the government is hiding.
Viral posts claim that NASA has long been aware of an upcoming gravitational anomaly through a covert initiative known as “Project anchor.” As per these rumours, the supposed event is scheduled to take place at 14:33 UTC (16:33 South African Standard Time) and will persist for roughly seven seconds.
NASA steps in with assurances, negating the possible occurrence of such events and debunking such claims.
“Earth’s gravity, or total gravitational force, is determined by its mass,” NASA said, talking about the basics of elementary school science concepts.
“The only way for the Earth to lose gravity would be for the Earth system, the combined mass of its core, mantle, crust, ocean, terrestrial water, and atmosphere, to lose mass. The Earth will not lose gravity on Aug. 12, 2026,” NASA added.
Some claims even alleged that this event will be caused by gravitational waves from black holes but according to the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), these waves’ effects produced by black holes and most violence events in the universe rarely reach Earth and if they reach the effects are extremely small. There is no scientific proof that these waves could vanish Earth’s gravity.
