Joe Lieberman, a former US Senator from Connecticut, has passed away at 82 in New York City due to a fall, according to his family.

“His beloved wife, Hadassah, and members of his family were with him as he passed. Senator Lieberman’s love of God, his family, and America endured throughout his life of service in the public interest,” the statement said.

He was known for being independent in his views. He sometimes disagreed with his political party, the Democrats. Joe Lieberman was a senator who sometimes disagreed with his fellow Democrats. Although he annoyed some Democrats by criticising Barack Obama, he supported gay rights, civil rights, and environmental causes, which pleased many liberals.

Lieberman got close to becoming vice president in 2000 with Al Gore, but George W. Bush won by a tiny margin in Florida. Lieberman would have been the first Jewish vice president.

Later, he almost became John McCain’s running mate in 2008.

He was famous for being the first Jewish person on a major party’s presidential ticket and for being critical of President Bill Clinton during a scandal.

Lieberman tried to run for president himself in 2004 but dropped out early.

Despite being a Democrat, he often supported Republicans, especially on matters of war and national security. This caused tension within his party, with some accusing him of being disloyal.

After leaving the Senate, Lieberman started working in a law firm.

He and his wife, Hadassah, have four children.

Lieberman will be remembered for his strong opinions and his willingness to stand up for what he believed in, even if it meant going against his own party.
