The United States, Denmark and Greenland have reached an agreement that will expand the US military presence on the Arctic island and prevent US adversaries from establishing bases or making sensitive investments there, US President Donald Trump said on Friday.
In a Truth Social post, Trump said the agreement would give the United States permanent authority to take measures it considers necessary to protect Greenland and US security interests.
“At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland,” Trump wrote.
He also said no US adversary would be allowed to establish a base or military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments there, without Washington’s written approval.
The Danish prime minister’s office separately said Greenland, Denmark and the US expect to sign an agreement next week aimed at strengthening security in the Arctic and North Atlantic.
The development falls short of Trump’s long-standing push for the United States to acquire Greenland, a strategically located semi-autonomous territory of Denmark.
Denmark and Greenland have repeatedly rejected the idea of a transfer of sovereignty, while supporting closer cooperation with Washington on Arctic security.
The United States already operates Pituffik Space Base in northwest Greenland under a 1951 defence agreement with Denmark.
Washington has argued that greater US involvement in Greenland is necessary to counter growing strategic competition in the Arctic.
Trump said the US would “immediately begin” developing a larger military presence at appropriate locations on the island.
