Karachi likely to receive light rain over next few hours: Met Office

KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Monday night forecast light showers in different parts of Karachi over the next few hours.

In a statement, the weather department said moderate rain clouds were present over the city’s northeastern parts.

It said “signs of moderate rain” were visible in the northeastern parts of Karachi.

The Met Office warned that heavy rains, from tonight to September 16, may cause urban flooding in low lying areas of southeastern Sindh — Tharparkar, Nagarparkar, Islamkot, Mithi, Umerkot, Thatta, Badin.

It further said that rain may wreak havoc in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Faisalabad and Lahore during the period.

Heavy rains may generate flash floods in local streams and nullahs in Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Malakand, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, Murree, Galliyat, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, it added.

The weather department said that Landslides may occur in hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galliyat and Kashmir during the forecast period.

Windstorm, hailstorm and lightning may damage weak structures during the forecast period, warned the Met Office.

It further said that Low Pressure Area is present over Southeast Rajasthan and adjoining north Gujarat, which is likely to move further west-southwestward during next 24 to 36 hours. A westerly wave is also affecting upper and central parts of the country.
