The body of Pakistani mountaineer Sohail Sakhi, who was among 10 climbers swept away by a deadly avalanche on Broad Peak, has been recovered and shifted to the mountain’s base camp, the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP) said on Thursday.
The avalanche struck on July 30, cutting off contact with the 10-member international expedition led by 43-year-old British-Nepali climber Purja on Broad Peak, one of the world’s highest mountains. His company confirmed there were no survivors.
According to the ACP, the body was searched for and recovered by Shigar’s local volunteers — Muhammad Nadeem, Muhammad Bashir, and Abu Zar—on their own initiative.
Sakhi’s remains were moved from Camp One to the mountain’s base camp and were expected to be airlifted to Skardu by an Army Aviation helicopter, if weather permits.
Meanwhile, the bodies of two mountaineers remain missing, and rescue operations were continuing to search for them.
The Alpine Club expressed condolences to Sakhi’s family and the mountaineering community.
Earlier, on August 6, the bodies of five mountaineers were shifted to Skardu.
