Trump tariff refund boosts Nintendo profit by 53%

Nintendo has experienced a massive surge in its profits, thereby beating its own earning forecasts. And all credit goes to Trump tariffs refund.

As a result of US tariffs refund, the Japanese game maker has witnessed a spike of 53 percent in profits to ¥147.4bn (£694m) over the three months to June, surpassing expert forecasts for ¥77.8bn.

On Thursday, Nintendo’s Tokyo-listed shares spiked 2.87 percent after the release of earnings.

According to the company, the Switch 2 console, released last summer” showed robust sales momentum. On the other hand, Nintendo’s other games such as Mysterious Book, Yoshi, Pokemon Pokopia and Star Fox demonstrated steady performance.

However, such performance was not enough for the company to compensate for the slump in sales compared to last year with revenue down by 10 percent.

In fact, the main booster was a refund on US tariffs after the Supreme Court in February struck down Donald Trump’s sweeping “liberation day” trade levies and called them illegal.

Consequently, the Trump administration refunded about $100 billion from the tariffs, representing 60 percent of the total $165 billion collected.

On Thursday, Nintendo’s Tokyo-listed shares spiked 2.87 percent after the release of earnings.

Nintendo previously filed a lawsuit following a US Supreme court, demanding a full refund from the administration for tariff expenses. Now, the company has received a refund but it did not disclose the amount yet.
