Last year, popstar Selena Gomez and model Hailey Bieber finally buried years-long feud over Justin Bieber, by sharing a picture at the star-studded Academy Museum Gala at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.
However, not many realised that the teen drama would soon escalate into a much more serious conflict in 2023, involving death threats, cyberbullying, and an endless battle between Selenators and Hailey fans to determine who is the true ‘mean girl’ among them.
On Friday, Selena shared a message on her Instagram story saying that Hailey had told her that she has been “receiving death threats and such hateful negativity.” The Calm Down singer further condemned those actions. She said, “This isn’t what I stand for. No one should have to experience hate or bullying. I’ve always advocated for kindness and really want this all to stop.”
Hailey broke her own silence this afternoon, commenting for the first time on how the internet’s been treating her.
She explained she and Selena had been privately talking for weeks about how to handle the drama, admitting that everyone could stand to be kinder about what they post online, including herself. She followed Selena back on Instagram too after Selena made the first move and followed Hailey this morning.
In her statement, Hailey shared, “I want to thank Selena for speaking out, as she and I have been discussing the last few weeks how to move past this ongoing narrative between her and I.” She added, “The last few weeks have been very hard for everyone involved and millions of people are seeing so much hate around this, which is extremely harmful. While social media is an incredible way to connect and build community, moments like this only create extreme division instead of bringing people together.”
The Rhode owner further commented, “Things can always be taken out of context or construed differently than they were intended. We all need to be more thoughtful about what we post and what we say, including myself. In the end, I believe love will always be bigger than hate and negativity, and there is always an opportunity to meet each other with more empathy and compassion.”
