ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Malaysia have agreed to strengthen intelligence-sharing mechanisms to combat terrorism, drug trafficking, and human smuggling.
This was agreed in a meeting between Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Malaysian Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution bin Ismail in Islamabad on Saturday. The meeting was followed by delegation-level talks attended by senior officials from both countries.
During the discussions, the two sides reviewed bilateral relations and explored ways to increase cooperation in areas related to internal security and law enforcement.
They exchanged views on counterterrorism measures, anti-drug operations, preventing illegal immigration, and tackling cybercrime.
Both ministers agreed that intelligence-sharing would play a key role in addressing security challenges and disrupting networks involved in terrorism and narcotics trafficking. They also discussed steps to make joint efforts against human smuggling more effective.
The two countries also agreed to enhance cooperation between Pakistan’s National Police Academy and the Royal Malaysian Police College. Discussions were held on expanding training programmes and sharing expertise in law enforcement. Cooperation in the coast guard sector was another important area of discussion.
Naqvi and Nasution also agreed on a joint working group and security cooperation in coast guard operations and related fields.
The interior minister expressed confidence that the Malaysian minister’s visit would contribute to stronger ties between the two countries and open new avenues of cooperation.
He said Malaysia had achieved significant economic and social progress and remained an important partner for Pakistan.
The meeting also covered tourism and visa facilitation. Both sides discussed measures to promote travel between the two countries and make visa procedures easier.
Naqvi said Malaysia remained a preferred destination for many Pakistani travellers and expressed hope that an increase in work quotas would allow more Pakistanis to seek employment in Malaysia through legal channels.
Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation across multiple sectors.
Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, the Federal Interior Secretary, Director General FIA, Inspector General Federal Constabulary, National Coordinator Nacta, Director General Passports, the Chief Commissioner and Inspector General of Islamabad, along with other senior officials, attended the meeting.
