OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever announced on Tuesday that he is leaving the company after nearly a decade. Sutskever was one of the original creators of the artificial intelligence technology behind ChatGPT.

Last fall, 37-year-old Sutskever was among four board members who decided to remove CEO Sam Altman, only to bring him back shortly after. As OpenAI’s chief scientist, it was Sutskever who informed Altman of his dismissal last November.

Sutskever took to social media site X to share his decision. He revealed that he would embark on a significant project. However, he did not provide any details about the project.

Altman expressed sadness over Sutskever’s departure. The OpenAI’s CEO lauded him as “one of the greatest minds of our generation, a guiding light of our field, and a dear friend.”

Jakub Pachocki will take over Sutskever’s role as chief scientist at the San Francisco-based company. Altman praised Pachocki as another great mind. Sam also expressed confidence in his ability to lead the company towards its mission of ensuring that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) benefits everyone.

AGI represents a future where machines will match or even surpass human intelligence in a wide range of tasks.

On Monday, OpenAI introduced an update to its AI model, which it claims can now reason across text, audio, and video in real-time.
