Kylian Mbappe’s potential move to Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has generated a lot of buzz in the football world but according to reports, the Frenchman has agreed to take a pay cut to join the Spanish giant.

His move to Real Madrid marks “the most expensive free transfer in history”, according to Sky Sports.

Real Madrid has been long-time admirers of the 25-year-old, and it seems that they are finally set to land their man on July 1.

To secure Mbappe, Real is preparing to offer him a contract that would make him the highest-paid player in the club’s history, although his salary would be lower than what he currently earns at PSG, where he is paid a whopping £171 million per year.

“The money that Real Madrid would have been paying as a transfer fee, they are basically going to be paying to the player instead. He will be getting a massive signing-on fee – there are reports in Spain that it could be over £100m,” according to Sky Sports.

However, the final details of the contract are still being negotiated, with terms yet to be agreed.

What number might Mbappe wear for Real Madrid?

Mbappe’s latest move has raised questions about the number on the back of his shirt.

The No. 9, a symbol of Los Blancos and worn by legends like Alfredo Di Stefano, is currently free. It could be given to Brazilian star Endrick, who will work under Carlo Ancelotti next season upon turning 18, Marca reported.

Mbappe has not worn the No.9 shirt with PSG nor with France.

The No. 7 shirt in Real is currently worn by Vinicius Jr, who took it after Eden Hazard’s 2023 departure. Mbappe could potentially take the No.10 shirt, currently owned by Luka Modric whose contract expires at the end of the season.

It is, therefore, a feasible option as it is also the number that the striker wears in the French national team and one that he is on record in saying he likes: “I wanted it. It was free and there was no one around,” Mbappe said. “I took it and I played with it.

“I see myself more as a guy who has always liked this number and who plays with the big boys. It’s not going to change too much how I play whether I have the 10, the 12 or the 29.”
