Karachi’s primary electricity supplier, K-Electric (KE) aims to increase its renewable energy share to 30% by 2030 as part of its bid to move towards sustainable and green energy amid prevailing climate change challenges.

In a statement, the KE spokesperson underscored that the utility supplier has made large-scale investments to increase its efficiency as it expects a 30% hike in consumers.

Stressing that the company will produce electricity via renewable sources when the demand reaches 5,000 megawatts, the spokesperson underscored that it has collaborated with Balochistan and Sindh governments which have allocated lands for KE’s electricity generation projects.

“The 220-MW project in Dhabeji is part of the budding programme,” the spokesperson added.

The remarks come as the country has seen a notable push by both the government and domestic consumers themselves towards the shift towards renewable energy not only because of the increasing energy costs but also due to the country facing the brunt of climate change.

KE’s shift towards 30% renewable energy was previously reflected in the supplier’s seven-year investment plan amounting to Rs392.4 billion.

Furthermore, the company has also received regulatory approval on RFPs for 640MW renewable projects which is another critical link in the mission to enable access to affordable energy for all.
