President Joe Biden is projected to win Michigan’s Democratic presidential primary, capturing 80% of the vote, despite a considerable protest vote expressing dissatisfaction with the strong US support for Israel in the Gaza conflict, BBC reported.

The “uncommitted” votes, exceeding expectations at 13%, raised eyebrows, with activists considering it a victory.

Listen to Michigan, an advocacy group, celebrated the substantial “uncommitted” vote, viewing it as a success in conveying dissatisfaction with the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Former congressman Andy Levin, supporting the “uncommitted” vote, addressed the crowd, acknowledging the necessity to address the humanitarian crisis.

Biden’s victory in Michigan, a critical swing state with a significant Arab-American population, highlights the impact of US-Israel relations on voter sentiments. While Biden secured the win, the protest votes underscore a segment of the electorate expressing concerns over the US stance in the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The Gaza conflict, ongoing since October 7, has resulted in a devastating toll, with 29,974 casualties and 70,325 injuries, primarily among civilians, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. International pressure for a ceasefire continues as the conflict escalates.

Notably, the “uncommitted” movement gained traction in Michigan, receiving endorsements from elected officials, including Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib. The movement aimed to send a strong message to Biden regarding concerns over the lack of a ceasefire in Gaza.

The results indicate that both Biden and Trump are on course for a rematch in November’s general election. Michigan, a pivotal swing state, once again plays a crucial role in shaping the political landscape.

The protest votes signal a diverse range of opinions within the electorate, reflecting the complexity of foreign policy considerations impacting domestic politics.
