A young man’s life has become hell after a friend jestingly shared his image on social media posing him as a robber proving that the lies travel far faster and farther than the truth and thus be avoided before the joke turns .
20-year-old Abdul Basit’s picture was posted by his friend Mirza Zeeshan that went viral. Zeeshan in his post claimed that Abdul Basit was involved in the robbery incident that recently took place in Korangi. A couple of other mutual friends commented in support of the claim below the post strengthening the suspicion.
Following the post’s going viral, Abdul Basit was so mentally tortured that he quit getting out of his house and when he needed to go out for some crucial work, he hid his face out of embarrassment.
The victim said he had filed a complaint to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and police in this regard.
He said the police cooperated with him and called his friends to the police station where they sought apology for their misconduct. They said that they did not know that their joke would become so serious.
Abdul Basit said he and his family members had though pardoned his friends, however, they would like to send a message to the public that spreading false news or jokes about a person may put his life in danger, therefore social media platforms should not be misused.
It is pertinent here to mention that rampant street crimes in Karachi have brought the city’s residents to the boiling point.
Since January 1, at least 59 people have lost their lives while 200 were injured due to resisting robbery this year so far in the metropolis.
According to Geo News, as many as 6,780 crimes were committed in Karachi in the holy month of Ramadan alone in which 20 vehicles were snatched and more than 130 others stolen.
Moreover, 830 motorcycles were also snatched with 4,200 others stolen in the same month. Meanwhile, 19 people lost their lives in Ramadan while 55 were injured.
