China in global first has secured a major space milestone by achieving its first recovery of a Zhuque-3 Y2 rocket’s first stage on land.
The Zhuque-3 Y2 rocket blasted off at 7:35 am from the Dongfeng commercial space innovation pilot zone in northwest China.
In the historic milestone, Chinese commercial rocket company LandSpace remained successful in land-based recovery of the rocket’s first stage during which the company retrieved a stainless steel booster after orbital launch.
The launch comes after the successful sea-based net recovery of the Long March-10B’s first stage on July 10.
What makes this mission significant is the potential of a successful mission that could pave the way towards developing lower-cost reusable rockets. By successfully pursuing a dual-track strategy, China is the first country to master orbital launch recovery through multiple technological routes, outpacing the United States in reusable rocket development.
At the core of this achievement is the Zhuque-3, making history as China’s first commercial rocket to achieve both orbital insertion and first-stage recovery using deployable landing legs.
With this breakthrough, LandSpace has become the fourth commercial entity to secure controlled recovery of reusable rockets after an orbital launch. Earlier, US companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin and the state-owned China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) hold this entitlement.
To compete in the space race, LandSpace plans to reuse the Zhuque-3 booster up to 20 times, aimed at reusing recovered stages within 6 months.
With this success, China has come closer to give a tough challenge to SpaceX and Blue Origin in showcasing reusable-rocket capabilities.
