The 8th of February witnesses a crucial juncture for the South Asian nation as Pakistan’s general elections are transpiring, with intense rivalry emerging amongst political groups in the NA-56 Rawalpindi 5 constituency.

Candidates

Awami Muslim League’s (AML) Sheikh Rashid Ahmad, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed Shehryar Riaz, Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) Sumaira Gul, and Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan’s (TLP) Sajjad Akbar Abbasi are among more two dozen candidates vying for the seat.

The constituency — previous NA-62 Rawalpindi-VI — comprises Rawalpindi Metropolitan Corporation’s Charge No.34’s Circle No 1 and 2, Charge No 35 and 36, Chaklala Cantonment excluding the following charges: Charge No 5, 6, Charges of Municipal Corporation Rawalpindi: Charge No 20, 21, 25, 26, 27, and 28.

Overview

In 2018, AML chief Rashid won with 117,719 votes, while PML-N’s Daniyal Chaudhry came second.

The constituency has a total of 879,357 population, of which 523,733 are registered voters. Among them, 272,459 are men and 251,274 women.
