On Wednesday, Amazon announced plans to offer drone deliveries in nearly 500 US cities by the end of the year, marking a major project for a project that has been slowly evolving.

The mission was presented by founder Jeff Bezos almost 13 years ago with the planned expansion for Prime Air now representing a sixfold expansion of its current footprint.

The latest update comes five months after vice president of Prime Air; David Carbon championed the program and laid out ambitious growth plans in a company-wide meeting.

According to Carbon, Prime Air will complete 1 million deliveries this year as Amazon has the most requested aerial fulfillment fleet in the industry.

Amazon is hoping it can modify drone delivery from a cutting-edge concept into a crucial piece of its quick turnaround plan.

Amazon is known to test ultrafast models in more pockets of the US now through Amazon Now. The company stated that most Prime Air packages arrive in about 60 minutes.

In this connection, Carbon said: “Customers continue to demand faster delivery times. The bottom line is we have to reach diminishing returns when it comes to how fast we deliver to our customers.”

What to know about Amazon drones

Amazon’s drones are ready for dispatching packages that are up to 5 pounds and within a 7.5-mile radius of its delivery hubs.

The company has widened eligibility of items eligible for drone delivery by merging its drone operations into some robotic sort centers rather than relying on the smaller same-day delivery-hubs where drones were previously preserved.

Prime Air is testing a new unmanned aerial logistics system that could enable it to carry a vast array of products, including fragile cartoons of eggs and other perishables, according to reports.

Amazon has been making drone deliveries in Darlington since February using drones specifically to design and make a safe landing.

Carbon further added, “We trained our algorithms, we felt pretty good, but we found in the real world the performance just wasn’t good enough and let me tell you, that was a humbling experience.”
