England produced a strong performance to defeat Pakistan 4-1 in their FIH World Cup Pool D encounter at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands, on Saturday.
England took control of the match early and maintained their advantage throughout the four quarters. Their attacking pressure was rewarded with four goals, while Pakistan managed to find the net once.
The defence of Pakistan — who were making their first World Cup appearance since 2018 after failing to qualify for the 2023 edition — faced sustained pressure throughout the contest, with England earning several penalty corners.
The Green Shirts also created opportunities, including two penalty corners, but failed to convert either of them.
England took the lead through Stuart Rushmere in the 12th minute, before Sam Ward doubled their advantage in the second quarter. Samuel Hooper added England’s third goal in the 31st minute, putting Pakistan under further pressure, before James Albery struck in the 47th minute to extend England’s lead.
Pakistan pulled one back through Rehman Abdul Afraz in the 50th minute, giving the Green Shirts hope of a dramatic comeback. However, it proved too little, too late as England held on to secure a convincing 4-1 victory.
Pakistan will face Wales and arch-rival India on August 17 and 19, respectively.
