Skygazers are all set to witness one of the year’s most breathtaking meteor showers starting Friday, promising fireballs and beams of light across the night sky.

The Perseid meteor shower will run from July 17 to August 2024 so viewers will have abundant opportunities to catch a rare glimpse.

Skywatchers are lucky enough to catch a glimpse along the coast on weekends, but fog will quickly increase. At present, the meteor shower is forecast to peak overnight August 12 into August 13.

To catch an intriguing glimpse, people should head inland for experiencing incredible views of the meteors.

Skies will be clear just after sunset mainly east of the Caldecott Tunnel, but clouds are expected to push across much of the bay after midnight on Sunday and Monday.

Notably, high clouds linked with Tropical Storm Elida will likely increase over the coming week.

According to the American Meteor Society, the Perseid meteor shower can create up to 75 meteors per hour.

It is crucial to note that the meteors are visible because Earth is passing through the debris, creating radiating streaks of light. This year, meteor showers will peak on August 12, as it synchronizes with the new moon and ultimately creates darker skies that provide perfect viewing conditions for the spectacle’s high point.

Furthermore, city dwellers can head to areas away from city lights for optimal viewing, including Mount Diablo and Lake Del Valle.
