In a recent interview with Film Companion, Indian cinema actor Shahid Kapoor made comments about marriage that have sparked a significant backlash from the public, Hindustan Times reports. Kapoor, who has been married to Mira Rajput since 2015, suggested that a woman enters a man’s life to “fix” him.

When asked about his take on marriage, Kapoor stated, “This entire marriage thing is about one thing: is that the guy was a mess and the woman came in to fix him. So, the rest of his life is going to be a journey of him getting fixed and becoming a decent person. That’s pretty much what life is about.”

These comments immediately drew criticism from various quarters, with many objecting that it is unfair and unrealistic to place the burden of “fixing” a partner solely on women within a marriage. People argued that a healthy and successful marriage should be built on equality, mutual support, and personal growth for both partners.

One individual responded, “That’s why I was always scared of marriage. You proved me right.” Another asserted, “Kapoor really has horrible views about marriage.”

Several comments on Reddit highlighted the fact that it is not a woman’s inherent duty to nurse or fix a grown man. Responding to Kapoor’s comments, one user stated, “[A] lot of people think it’s cute and romantic for a ‘broken’ guy to be fixed by a girl. Such a lame trope.” Another user called Kapoor out for behaving like a character he essayed. “I get that you played Kabir Singh but you don’t have to continue behaving like that,” stated the comment.

Kapoor’s comments that place the onus of “fixing” a man on his partner come after a recent interview where he spoke about feeling “embarrassed” due to the 14-year age gap between him and Rajput. In an interaction with Humans of Bombay, Kapoor said, “When I met her, she was just 20 and I was 34. First of all, I thought she was too young. I was semi-embarrassed at that time. But once we started talking, she was very mature and very sure of herself.”

Shedding light on how Rajput entered his life, Kapoor recounted, “I was 33-34 and I was very lonely. I would win awards, come back home, and share them with my dog. I realised you need to share your life with somebody. I was single and happy, life was great, and I was independent. But, I was lonely so I wanted to have an immediate family.”

Furthermore, he spoke about finding somebody who would grasp how drastically different his personal and professional lives were. “I was open to meeting someone I could settle down with. My biggest concern was I have a very schizophrenic reality – one side is all spiritual, meditation, no alcohol, meditation, etcetera and the other side is all about my acting and glamour. So, I thought the girl would understand only either of the two. That’s when I met Mira,” Kapoor added.
