The incessant surge in petrol prices has left consumers reeling, with the Finance Division most recently announcing a hike of over Rs6 per litre.

With prices at record highs, Pakistanis are feeling the impact immediately — at the pump. But higher fuel prices are a headwind for the wider economy too, beyond just consumers having fewer bucks to spend. The rising cost of fuel, especially petrol, means that anything transported is affected.

The average price in Pakistan for a litre of regular petrol is Rs233.91 in mid-August 2022, up around 95% from a year ago. The price of petrol per litre in August 2021 was Rs119.80.

The government, on Monday, jacked up the price of petrol by Rs6.72 per litre for the next fortnight due to fluctuations in petroleum prices in the international market and exchange rate variations.

The decision taken by the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif-led government was not only criticised by the consumers, it also received backlash from the coalition parties

However, Minister for Finance Miftah Ismail defended the decision by saying the increase was necessary and that no taxes were imposed.

With the latest announcement, the price of petrol has been increased from Rs227.19 per litre to Rs233.91 per litre and that of LDO (light diesel oil) from Rs191.32 to Rs 191.75 per litre. The price of HSD (high speed diesel), however, has gone down to Rs244.44 from Rs244.95 per litre.

Most people in Pakistan, especially men, travel on their motorbikes, which means this is the segment that keeps a closer eye on fluctuations in prices compared to others.
