HARIPUR: A massive fire erupted in a public school for girls in Haripur on Monday, putting lives of hundreds of people present in the building at peril.
A rescue official said fire swept through Government Girls Higher Secondary School in the Sirikot of Haripur District area while hundreds of pupils were present there.
Fire trucks were sought from TMA and Ghazi areas as firefighters along the local residents began putting off the blaze, the official said, adding that fire brigade vehicles faced trouble reaching the incident’s site because of mountainous terrain.
Haripur’s Rescue 1122 spokesperson Faraz Jalal said there were about 1,400 students and all of them were safely evacuated from the school building.
The spokesperson said the blaze burnt school furniture, all the record and ceilings. “The inferno badly damaged the entire school building,” he said.
It was transpired that the female students were evacuated by residents of the area on their own.
As per the rescue department, no loss of life happened. It said about half of the school building was constructed with wood.
The exact reason behind the fire could not be ascertained till filing of the report.
