Winger Ademola Lookman led Atalanta to an unexpected victory in the Europa League, ending Bayer Leverkusen’s unbeaten run this season.

It was a big occasion for Atalanta to rejoice as it was their first trophy in six decades. The 26-year-old winger was the highlight of the Europa League final as he scored all three goals in a 3-0 triumph for his side. Lookman’s performance was nothing short of spectacular as he overshadowed Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen.

Leverkusen have been unbeaten until this match on a streak of 51 unbeaten matches. That is why they look set for a historic treble and an unbeaten European season.

Unlike previous Europa League matches, Leverkusen couldn’t stage a comeback, with Lookman continually finding the net.

Veteran coach Gian Piero Gasperini’s tactical acumen was evident from the start of the game as Atalanta dominated the game, cutting through Leverkusen’s defence with ease. Davide Zappacosta’s assist for Lookman’s first goal highlighted Leverkusen’s defensive frailties. Lookman’s second goal, a brilliant long-range effort, further demoralised Leverkusen.

Leverkusen attempted to respond, with Alex Grimaldo getting into dangerous positions but failing to capitalise. Alonso’s tactical changes, including bringing on Victor Boniface, added vigour to their attack, but it was too late. Lookman’s third goal confirmed Atalanta’s dominance.
